'Is George Bush Really Stupid?'

"Is George W. Bush really stupid? Was John Kerry a flip-flopper? Who’s the real Hillary Clinton? Why can’t debates be like they were with Lincoln & Douglas? What we really need is another Harry Truman—a real American who tells it like it is. These are all comments about political images—the rhetorical markers of the character and persona of a political actor. Political images reach voters through mediated channels and they are multi-dimensional and often contradictory. Citizens and students and voters alike need to pay greater attention to such images because they always have, and always will, be central to our political lives. This discussion seeks to reinvigorate the theoretical and practical concept of the “political image,” highlighting its historical basis in American constitutional politics and political history and revealing its conceptual use in understanding contemporary political activity."
